Mabinogi:Magic Guide

I would like to show you my guide to mages, as they have the potential to be one of the most powerful classes. I really enjoy playing as a mage, and I hope that after reading this guide, you will have the know-how to enjoy it as well!

Beginning as a mage can be really rough, but stick with it and in the end (hopefully, ) you will be the great, powerful master of the universe. Err, right. On with the guide!

Let’s begin with a basic overview of the skills people overlook, because they’re not readily available as books:

For example, the magical skill “Meditation” can be learned from Stewart (Teacher NPC in Dunbaton, the second town) when you equip your Elemental Master title and talk to him about skills. The aforementioned title can be acquired by learning all 3 types of bolts (Just have to rank F them, and you’ll instantly get the title. It adds +10 Mana, so it’s quite useful to have early on.)

To get Meditation past rank F, you have to open up Stewart’s secret store. In there, you can buy the book that will advance it to rank E - currently the highest rank of Meditation the game allows.

In addition to Meditation, there’s the skill “Magic Mastery” that can be learnt from Lasa, the red-haired schoolteacher in the first town. For each level in this, it adds +10 mana. It’s pretty much essential for a mage, if you have the AP to spare. At ranks past 9 it will add INT.

Healing is also a useful spell to have. The book costs about 9800? gold, I think. It’s essential to have as a mage to save money on potions for your party. Healing yourself is not advised as it drains stamina like mad.

Enchanting is a useful spell to have as a mage - to get it, just equip a magic powder. Enchanting means that you can take an enchant scroll and add it to a certain item. Equipping a scroll and magic powder at the same time and using the skill lets you enchant. It’s pretty simple; scrolls can be obtained from the end chest in Alby dungeon as practice, or you can Enchant Burn an item. Enchant burning means that you remove the enchantment on an item, destroying it(!!). It’s pretty easy to do; you just make sure to have magic powder, mana herb, and blessed water in your inventory, and drop the item you want to burn into a campfire - it’ll ask you whether you want to “Enchant burn” or “enchant entrust burn”. Pick enchant burn. Entrust is a bit complicated to work out as it is. It involves having another person in your party, hopefully with more INT than you have, burn the item. You have to have a yellow herb in order for this to work, as well as higher grade of magic powder.
However, I must save the best for last in this mage guide (since i <3 being a mage). magic system are the huge area of effect spells, Fireball, and Thunder. Each has the capability of dealing massive amounts of damage and clearing out entire rooms. =However= the quests to get them on the real servers are quite long and difficult; it involves going through a lot of lower and middle dungeons and killing specific monsters that drop seals (you need 10 seals of a certain skill added to a collection book in order to actually learn the aforementioned skill).
Fireball and thunder both require their respective fire and lightning wands to use, and take up 125 mana for a full charge. It’s pretty hefty, but works wonders in rooms

The two “big dogs” in

an addition, there’s also some pointers I would like to give about my experiences using magic and getting owned by magic.
MAGIC POINTERS: Random Facts That I’ve gathered. STRATEGY.
A good strategy for getting through Raby dungeon is using Ice bolt -> counter attack for the skeletons. Fire a bolt and immediately go into counter attack; for red and metal skeletons, if they start to load up an arrow, charge another ice bolt immediately and repeat process. Luckily these monsters will only single aggressive, so try not to piss off the wrong one (the one following you will have !! over its head when it spots you.
Ice -> counter will work on pretty much any monster that doesn’t run too fast. Well, provided you’re at maximum distance. I stress experimenting at this point to determine what works for you… lag can also be a great factor in this.

=HOWEVER=
most boss monsters and some normal monsters will have what is known as “mana refractor” skill; that is, all magic will do damage to them but glance off and have no effect whatsoever on their stride. What I mean by this is - monsters will normally recoil after you hit them with a bolt, leaving you time to think of your next action, but mana refractor monsters will keep right on running towards you. Examples that I can think of at the moment are the Ogres, Golems. Anything BIG, I guess.

=BUT=
one big advantage of fire bolt is that it will knock down ANY monster. Yes, any monster, mana refractor or not. It can be a lifesaver in any situation.

As for lightning bolt, it’s not as useless as some may presume it to be. With high balance, you will do almost always maximum damage with the bolt. This is how it breaks down.

Against a SINGLE ENEMY : LIGHTNING BOLT WILL :

1 bolt charged: make it recoil
2 bolts charged: push it back
3 bolts charged: make it fly and land on its back
4 bolts charged: same as 3
5 bolts charged: same as 3

Against MULTIPLE ENEMIES : LIGHTNING BOLT WILL:

Hit as many enemies as you have bolts charged, of course.
Example:

And Lightning bolt WILL: DISAPPARATE OVER TIME. Only charge it when you need it. None of the other magics will do this.
Fire bolt will: Get stronger with each charge. Maximum of 5 charges, of course.

Being a mage, it is entirely possible to solo almost every dungeon. The end bosses may give you some trouble Mabinogi money, as they will require some use of your undeveloped melee skills. Ciar dungeon, for example, may provide some difficulty with its final boss - the golem. However it is possible to take it down using only F ranked melee skills (look foward to another guide about fighting golems, i guess @_@) However, if you’re not sure of your abilities, call in some friends (good idea) or just wing out of the dungeon (meh… not so hot. You’d miss out on the goodies at the end).

A great general strategy for fighting in dungeons is: charge up 5 ice bolts and go hide in a corner that is not crowded with monsters, or that has the least monsters near it. Snipe the monsters close to you - but, as you do it, charge up a bolt as they fall. If done right, you can get in two cycles of 3 bolts - after which you will have to melee if it’s not dead.

Good experience with the melee system and knowledge of monsters’ skills are critical at this area, because as a mage you will have rank F in every melee skill (except critical hit). Make sure to practice queing up skills on easier monsters so you know what you’re doing.
